If your doctor has instructed you to restrict your diet, it is important to follow those instructions. However, if you are eating less overall, continuing the same restrictions as when you were younger can lead to malnutrition, where you lack essential energy and protein.
When you become malnourished
- Muscle strength decreases
- You get tired easily
- Increased risk of falling
- You are more likely to get sick.
- Motivation tends to decrease.
When the amount you eat decreases
Sometimes, "getting enough of the necessary nutrients" is more important than "balancing your nutrition." Incorporate meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products into your diet in a reasonable amount to supplement your energy and protein intake.
If you have a chronic illness and have received dietary instructions from your doctor, do not stop restricting your diet on your own. Instead, consult with your doctor or a registered dietitian to determine a diet that suits your current physical condition.
