As people age, the amount they can eat at one time may decrease. Three meals a day may not provide enough energy and protein, so incorporating snacks wisely can help supplement nutrients that are often lacking.
Recommended snacks
Pudding, ice cream containing milk fat, sponge cake, cream puffs, steamed buns, and pizza buns are foods that provide not only energy but also protein. Amazake (sweet rice drink) and lactic acid bacteria drinks also contribute to nutritional supplementation.
It's also important to eat when you have the time to eat.
Even if you can't eat at mealtime, you might be able to have an afternoon snack. It's important to think in terms of "eating when you can" rather than "being fixated on three meals a day."
"I was able to eat pudding today"—on days like that, be sure to celebrate with them by saying, "You were able to eat today!" A positive attitude towards eating can lead to a better next meal.
